Becklingen War Cemetery was chosen for its position on a hillside overlooking Luneburg Heath, where, on 4 May 1945, Field-Marshal Montgomery accepted the German surrender from Admiral Doenitz. Most of those buried here died during the last two months of the war. The war graves of the fallen remembered today are in England, Belgium, Gallipoli, Hong Kong, and Malta.

Wall of Remembrance at Australia’s National War Memorial in Canberra. George Henry “Harry” McNeill lived in Londonderry with his parents, two brothers, and sister. Jobs in the city were scarce, so he decided to go to Australia and learn sheep farming. There were cousins already out there who had a farm.
