August 15 – Roll of Honour

The National Arboretum – Today’s Roll reflects the cost of the ill-conceived Gallipoli campaign. Five of the eleven recalled today died there. One was killed in action eight days after landing with his battalion at Sulva Bay.

+CRAIG, Adam
12th Royal Irish Rifles. Rifleman. 4934 . Died 15/08/1917. Age 35. Born Ahoghill. Enlisted Ballymena. Son of Adam and Elizabeth Craig of Lisnafillan, Gracehill. Husband to Jane Craig, Bridge End, Gracehill. Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Cullybackey UF Church

+GRUBB, Donald James
Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 5 Btn.attalion. Second Lieutenant. Died 15/08/1915. Age 20. Educated at Wesley College, Dublin, he “was well known in sporting circles, being a first class swimmer, and a player who was not easily thrown aside in the rugby field”.  He had entered the linen business sometime before 1914 and joined the QUB OTC on the outbreak of war in 1914. Gazetted to the Inniskillings in September 1914, he was later posted as Signalling Officer to 5 RInF. He left for the Dardanelles from Basingstoke on 10/07/1915, landing with his battalion at Sulva Bay on 07/08/1915.  He was KIA eight days later. His Commanding Officer in writing of Lieut. Grubb says “he met his death while bravely attending the wounded at great personal risk under a very heavy fire”. Donald spent a time in Cookstown and worked at Gunnings factory. “C” Coy. 5th Bn. Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Private.11947. Died 15/08/1915. Aged 25. Son of Mrs. Eliza McCourt, of 25, Upper Charleville St., Belfast; husband to the late Charlotte McCourt. Helles Memorial, Cape Helles, Gallipoli

6th Bn. Royal Irish Fusiliers. Lieutenant. Died 15/08/1915. Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey

+TORBITT, William
6th Royal Irish Fusiliers. Private. 12684. Died 15/08/1915. He was born at Ahoghill and lived in Belfast. Son of Arthur and Agnes Torbitt, of 46, Summer St., Belfast. Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey

+BENNETT, William Henry David
13th Btn. Royal Canadian Regiment. Captain. Died 15/08/1917. Age 27. Son of W. S. Bennett, Castlecaulfield, Dungannon. He served 5 years with the Royal Irish Constabulary and 1 ¼ years with the 5th H G. Emigrated to Canada and worked as a relief clerk with C.D.R before enlisting on 23/09/1914 at Valcartier, Quebec. Born 03/01/1890 1890 at Balinode, County Monaghan. Husband to Ida Kathleen of Knockmult House, Macosquin. Mazingarbe Communal Cemetery Extension, Mazingarbe, Pas de Calais. +BUSBY, Isaac
12th Bn. Royal Irish Rifles. Lance Corporal. 870. Died 15/08/1917. Son of William and Martha Busby of Kedew, Caledon, Dungannon. He was born in Caledon about 1880. In the 1910 Ulster Town’s Directory, Isaac is listed as a coachman. By the time of the 1911 census, 30 year old Isaac is a Coachman and Domestic Servant, married to Agnes and living in Killylea, Co Armagh, when he enlisted in Belfast. Sick Berth Attendant. D/MX 84738. Died 15/08/1944. Age 21. HM LST 404. Member of the North Belfast Division St John Ambulance Brigade, and a staff sergeant in the Boys Brigade.
