HERON, Oscar Aloysius
Royal Flying Corps, Captain and Flight Commander. DFC, Croix de Guerre (Bel). The son of the Principal of St Patrick’s School, Banbrook Hill, Armagh. He was a clerical student in the National University. In Aug 1917 he joined the Inns of Court Training Corps with a view to obtaining a commission in the Connaught Rangers, but joined the Royal Flying Corps instead. (Ulster Gazette 07/09/1918). He joined 70 squadron in May 1918. He was credited with 13 victories, most of them during October. As a Sopworth Camel pilot, ten of his victories were over the Fokker D.VII. He was awarded the DFC and Belgian Croix de Guerre and was promoted Captain and flight commander. Heron joined the Irish Air Corps in 1922. He was killed during the Irish Air Corps’ first Air Pageant at Phoenix Park in 1933.
