RN. AB. 234899. Washed overboard from HMS Foresight, 15/12/1915.  Age 28. Boy service from 14/09/1905. Enrolled 21/09/1907 for 12 years. War service in Vivid I, Cumberland and Foresight. Foresight was built by Fairfield.  She was laid down in October 1903 and finally finished in 1905.  She survived the war and was laid off in 1920. Born Belfast 21/09/1899. Son of William and Nancy McFadden, James St., Harryville, Ballymena. Plymouth Naval Memorial. Panel 5. Larne WM. ADM 188/416/234899


RN. Petty Officer Stoker. K10685. HMS Arbutus. Died 15/12/1917. Age 25. Arbutus was a special service vessel which was torpedoed by German UB-65 during very rough weather. “Mr. William and Elizabeth Croskery, of Church-street, Portaferry, has been notified by the Admiralty that his son, John Croskery, Royal Navy, was lost at sea in recent operations.” Enrolled 25/03/1911 for 12 years. War service in Seagull, Skipjack, Vivid, Caesar, Prince George, Halcyon (P22), Victory X and Arbutus (27/10/1917 – 15/12/1917). Born Portaferry 28/02/1892. One of nine children. Baptised in Portaferry Catholic Church on 30/10/1892. Son of William and Elizabeth (nee Beattie) Croskery, Church St., Portaferry. Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Panel 11. ADM 188/888/10685

+McILWRATH, Edward
Royal Irish Rifles, 15th Btn. Rifleman. G/15420. Died 15/12/1917. Aged 29. Son of James and Margaret McIlwrath, of Ligoniel, Belfast. Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, France

+HENSHAW, Desmond

RN. FAA. Leading Airman (A). FX85331. Died 15/12/1941. Age 19. HMS Daedalus. Died when the Fairey Battle he was flying on a night exercise from Netheravon in Wiltshire, stalled in a right-hand turn and crashed two miles east of Shrewton. Rowed for MCB winning the maiden four at Dublin. Two brothers serving in RN. Son of Joseph McKeown Henshaw and Lillian Henshaw, Whitehead. (Belfast Weekly Telegraph 26/12/1941). +BELL, David Dunwoody
Royal Artillery. Lieutenant. 140727. Died 15/12/1942. 148 (The Bedfordshire Yeo.) Field Regt. Son of Henry Edward and Mary Bell, of Gracehill, Co. Antrim. Chungkai War Cemetery, Thailand

+GRACEY, Norman
RN. Lieutenant (E). Date of Death: 15/12/1942. Age: 26. HMS Nile. B.Sc. (Eng.), QUB 1938. Joined the navy at the outbreak of war, serving in destroyers in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. He was in the cruiser Hermione when she took part in the Madagascar operation and previous to that when she rammed and cut in two an Italian submarine. Hermione was sunk in June 1942 through enemy action in the Mediterranean. Norman was posted to HMS Nile, ‘a stone frigate’ in Egypt. Appointed Naval Officer Commanding, Beirut, he died on 15/12/1942 in Syria as a result of a road accident involving his car and a Free French ambulance. Son of Joseph Fforde Gracey, and Sarah Jane Gracey, Market Street, Lurgan. (Belfast Weekly Telegraph 01/01/1943). Beirut War Cemetery. Lurgan College WM. QUB WM

+McCAMMOND, William Henry
RAFVR.Sergeant. 1059218. Died 15/12/1942. Aged 26. 38 Sqdn. Son of James and Margaret Jane McCammond; husband to Charlotte McCammond, of Belfast. Alamein Memorial, Egypt
