January 27 – Roll of Honour

The record of the Inniskilling Fusiliers is once again reflected in this Roll of commemoration. The names of three WW1 Fusiliers are recorded on the Thiepval Memorial. William Wylie from Aughnacloy fell near Naples in the WW2 Italian campaign.

+SHEILS, John Joseph
RN. Petty Officer First Class. 161948. Died 27/01/1917. Age 42. Born in Portaferry. Son of Thomas and Sarah Sheils, Meetinghouse Lane, Portaferry. “An inquest has been held at St. Pancras on John Joseph Shiels, 42, of Portaferry, a first-class petty officer in the Navy. On 19th January 1917, he got leave for the purpose of visiting his home at Portaferry. On Saturday whilst walking along Euston Road, he was seen to stagger and fall, striking his head on the pavement. He was removed to a hospital, where he became unconscious, and died in a couple of hours from effusion of blood on the brain. The funeral took place at Portaferry yesterday with naval honours.” Portaferry Roman Catholic Graveyard. Portaferry WM.
