L/Bdr Stanley Merrifield was originally a soldier of the South Wales Borderers, the 2nd Battalion of which was the resident battalion in Ebrington Barracks, Londonderry, when war broke out in September 1939. In 1941 the regiment’s 7th Battalion was converted to artillery and became 90th LAA Regiment. It is likely that L/Bdr Merrifield had married a local woman while stationed in Londonderry before the war and that he had transferred to the 7th Battalion later. Incidentally, the grandfather of Paul Holywood (Great British Bake Off) also served in 7 SWB and 90 LAA Regt and was the subject of an episode ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ in 2015.
