Hauptmann Walther Koch, later Oberstleutnant, fought 38 (Irish) Brigade in Tunisia. His SturmRegiment Koch, or 5th Parachute Regiment, was highly respected, as was Koch, by its opponents. According to official German sources he was accidentally killed in a traffic collision in Berlin in 1943. According to his former soldiers, he was murdered by the authorities for criticising Hitler’s notorious Commando Order.
I met Rudolf Witzig in Germany in 1990 and interviewed him for a BBC Radio Ulster programme. He was one of those who believed that Koch had been murdered.
