May 29 – Roll of Honour. Dunkirk Memorial

Dunkirk Memorial to unknown. Seven NI men on today’s Roll who fought the rearguard action in 1940 to Dunkirk have no known grave. This is their memorial. Nicholas Acheson of Gosford and Albert McIlwee of Limavady died in HMS Hereford in 1941 evacuating troops from Crete. In 1943, 21-year-old AB William Grainger DSM died in a Motor Gun Boat. In 1944 Wm McCormick of the Skins died at Cassino.

  1. Rfn David Thompson was in the 2nd Bn Royal Ulster Rifles when he was killed at Dunkirk. At that time the 1st Bn was still in India and didn’t sail from Bombay until 4 June. Not until October 1941 was the 1st Bn told that it would become an airlanding battalion. Initially as part of 1st Airborne Division, it was later transferred to 6th.
