Army medical officer Alfred Thompson (Inst and QUB) was recommended for the Victoria Cross for his actions this day in 1916. He died the day before his 31st birthday. Men from Cookstown and Armagh died with the Paras in Normandy, and an Irish Fusilier from Lisnaskea fell at Naples. The RAF dropped 2,300 tons of bombs on the German defences in and around Caen.
