In 1914 six men from NI were lost in HMS Pathfinder the first RN warship to be sunk by a locomotive torpedo from a German U boat. Two WW1 nurses from Ballinderry and Magherafelt died in the course of their duty in 1915 and 1916. Two members of the Royal Flying Corps – one with links to the North Irish Horse died in WW1. Fred Diplock formerly of Queen’s University Air Squadron died in WW2.
