
The liberation of Walcheren, in the Netherlands in 1944 involved 4 Special Service Brigade ferried in by the Royal Navy. 41, 47 and 48 Commandos. They were part of a daring assault against multiple, heavily defended batteries. In 1940 JK Haire, an RAFVR pilot from Belfast, died saving a village school. Three other RAFVR died on this date. A veteran John Piggott served in RN 1901 – 1927. Born in Limavady he lived in Coleraine.
