January 19. Italy Battle Honour for Inniskillings. Roll of Honour

Today’s Roll inludes accounts of former Inst student Ralph Ireland a young RN officer lost in heavy seas in WW1; William Darragh from Cookstown who died in HMS Grenville in 1940, and Harry Christie, DSO, MC who died in Italy in 1944. A teacher in Strandtown Primary school, he is thought to be the ‘most decorated Inniskilling.’ There are six RAF personnel in today’s Roll. Photo – Ovillers Military Cemetery: On 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the 8th Division attacked Ovillers and the 34th Division La Boisselle. There are 3439 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery.
