February 6. Military honours for Portrush WW1 Rifleman. Roll of Honour

A real life love story features in today’s Veterans Roll. Joan Casement from Ballycastle, serving as an officer in the WRNS, had to resign her commission as she outranked her new husband serving with US forces. William Bacon from Portrush died in Newtownards in 1915 and was given a funeral with full military honours. William Dinnen from Aghadowey amd William Teaney from Magherafelt of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers died on the Somme in 1917. Three RAF men died on this day in 1942. Richard Thomas from Belfast serving in the Fleet Air Arm failed to return to base on Malta from a sortie against shipping. Robet Smyth from Rasharkin, another FAA pilot, was lost in 1945 flying from the Escort Aircraft Carrier H.M.S. Campania. Royal Salutes mark the Accession to the Throne on this day in 1952 when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became The Monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland upon the death of her father, King George VI.
