On this day in 1940 Serjeant James McCrae from Dungannon, serving with the Royal Scots Fusiliers, died at Dieppe. In 1942 three RAF men from NI died in service. George Cheatley from Belfast was serving in 502 (Ulster) Squadron and is named on its War Memorial in St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast. 21 year old Joseph Humphries from Belfast is named on the Runnymede Memorial, and Thomas Mathers also of Belfast was laid to rest in Ringwood Cemetery, Hampshire. Today’s veteran is definitely of a vintage. Samuel Withers, a medical officer educated at RBAI and QUB, served on the NW Frontier of India in 1897 – 98, and in the S Africa War 1899 – 02. The Comber man served also in the 1914 – 18 conflict. He died on this day in 1942. Duhallow War Cemetery (photo) is said to be called after an Irish Hunt.
