James Braithwaite a Company Serjeant Major from Lisburn and John Carruthers a private with links to Ballycastle who fell in WW1 are listed on the Basra Memorial in Iraq. The CSM may have died on a death march of prisoners of war. In 1917 two Ballymena men, William Blair and George McMullan, fell serving with the Royal Irish Rifles. Today’s Veterans include Bill Brown, a WW2 navy flier who later designed the well-known Ruffian sailing boat in Portaferry and Harry Hamilton, a WW1 DCM holder, who was Chairman of the White House, Portrush.
