For his actions on Messines Ridge on 12 April 1915 Private Morrow of The Royal Irish Fusiliers was awarded the Victoria Cross. Less than two weeks later he was badly wounded at St Julien and died of his wounds the following day on 26 April 1915. King George V presented the Victoria Cross to his mother at Buckingham Palace. The Belfast Telegraph of 12 April 1941 reported that RN Lieutenant EC Croswell from Warrenpoint was awarded the DSM for gallantry and devotion to duty at Dunkirk. Sergeant Gerald Ballard from Londonderry was serving with the North Irish Horse in Italy. He was awarded the Military Medal for leading a small dismounted patrol on 12 April 1945 which discovered where enemy tanks and positions were located on the Santerno banks. Edward Potts ,from Belfast, a Company Sergeant Major with the East Lancashire Regiment died on 12/04/1945. A week later the London Gazette of 19/04/1945 listed CSM Potts as a recipient of the Distinguished Conduct Medal in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in northwest Europe.
