April 17. Kemmel Battle Honour for 36th (Ulster) Division. Roll of Honour

On this day in 1934 the Fairey Swordfish biplane, that would become famous for its WW2 Royal Navy service, made its first flight. It would be involved in many FAA actions against enemy units including the Bismarck and Taranto, destroying more enemy tonnage than any allied aircraft. The Roll for 1942 records the deaths of four Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in Tunisia, Italy and Burmah. In 1943 three RAF air crew from NI died on a raid on the Skoda munitions plant at Pilzen. Denis Axtell and William McBriar were in the same Handley Page Halifax. Their graves are in France. In 1944 Henry Brooke son of the NI Prime Minister died serving with the Royal Hussars in Italy. His older brother Basil had died in 1943 serving in the Grenadier Guards.
