For conspicuous bravery this day in 1917, John Spencer Dunville of Holywood was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously in WW1. Eton educated, he had secured a place at Cambridge University but choose to serve in the cavalry. In 1916 three Irish Riflemen, formerly South Antrim Volunteers died in France. Coleraine-born James Wilson of the Inniskilling Fusiliers died at Messines in 1917. John Thompson a 17-year-old Boy Sailor from Belfast was the only fatality when an explosion occurred in the magazine of HMS Khartoum following an action off Aden in 1940.
