This is the anniversary of the death in 2018 of “The coolest man to have served in the Army”, Major General Corran Purdon CBE MC CPM who went from Campbell College to Colditz and much more. This is the anniveresary of the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife – an event that is widely regarded as sparking the outbreak of World War I. Exactly five years to the day, statesmen and diplomats from the world’s leading powers gathered at Versailles to sign the treaty formally ending the War. In WW2 James Filson from Kircubbin became a pilot in the RAF. On one Sunday morning he performed a low level run in his Spitfire along Main Street, Kircubbin. He was shot down twice by ‘friendly’ fire – once off Malta by the Royal Navy, and then over France by American forces. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1945.
