July 7 – NI WRNS who plotted D-Day landings. Roll of Honour

Joan Mary Cattanach a Northern Ireland wartime Wren who plotted the D-Day landings in a secret underground tunnel later trained as a dress designer at the Paris Academy of Fashion in London. Army medical officer Alfred Thompson (Inst and QUB) was recommended for the Victoria Cross for his actions this day in 1916. He died the day before his 31st birthday. In 1944 Gordon Reid from Cookstown and James Trotter from Armagh died with the Paras in Normandy, and George Kennedy, an Irish Fusilier from Lisnaskea, fell at Naples.The RAF dropped 2,300 tons of bombs on the German defences in and around Caen in 1944. In 1945 Thomas Cardwell from Dungannon fell in Burmah serving with the Royal Artillery.
