
In 1944 Old Portoran John Gorman was awarded the Military Cross for action in a tank battle in Normandy. Eliza Mehaffey a Royal Navy Nursing Sister from Strabane died when the plane she was travelling to Gibraltar in was shot down. George Maginnis from Aughnacloy, an officer in the airborne Royal Ulster Rifles fell in Normandy. Belfast born Charles Everitt fell with the Royal Canadian Regiment in the invasion of Sicily. A cousin of the compiler of Remembrance NI who died with the Inniskillings in India in WW2 was named after an uncle who survived the Somme in WW1.
