July 23. Belfast Searchlight Gunners hard road to Dunkirk Pt1. Roll of Honour

Glasgow born Marshall Caskey who lived in Garvagh died in 1916 with Royal Scots Fusiliers near Theipval. Hugh Osborne was working in the family accountancy firm in Belfast when he enlisted with the Officers’ Training Corps at Queen’s University, receiving a commission with the West Yorkshire Regiment. He also died in 1916. Both are named on the Thiepval Memorial. Belfast Able Seamen James Neill and Hugh Smith were lost in HMS Fearless in 1941. Hugh had been in two ships which also had been sunk by enemy aerial attack. Vivian Currie from Stormont died in 1942 when his plane came down in the sea to the north of Morlaix, Brittany, France. Sydney Haire died at El Alamein two years after his brother had died flying in the Battle of Britain. Today’s veteran, Commander Conway Allen from Dervock, was credited with sinking three U Boats in WW2. This is the anniversary of the keel laying of HMS Victory in 1795 and the birth in 1883 of Field Marshal Alan Brooke,1st Viscount Alanbrooke.
