
Thomas McCann joined the RAFVR in January, 1939, was called up on the outbreak of war, and got his wings on his 21st birthday. John Gamble from Kilrea served with Scots Guards. Wounded at Ypres in October 1914, he returned to the front and died this day in 1915. North RFC player Stanley Maxwell died this day in 1916 of wounds in a Prisoner of War Camp. Alex McCrae from Dungannon survived the Boer War and Gallipoli. He died attempting to rescue a fellow Royal Artillery officer near Ypres in 1917. Frederick Stewart from Cookstown was one of six RAF men who died when a bomb fell off a plane at a base in 1940. Their names are still honoured at Remembrance Services in a nearby Nottinghamshire community. Today’s veteran is Maurice Adams from Larne, Campbell and QUB. He was one of the highest ranking Naval medical officers to come from NI. One of five brothers to serve.
