September 16. VC recipient honoured by community. Roll of Honour

Photo – Courcelette Cemetery. Today’s Roll includes Francis Wiseley, a former surgeon at the Mater Hospital, Belfast, who died in 1915 of wounds received in the Dardanelles. James Holmes, a naval surgeon from Islandmagee and former Methodist College and QUB student, was invested into the DSO at sea by the King in June 1917. Thomas Sanders, a Petty Officer Stoker from the Shankill Road who served in the Iron Duke at Jutland, died this day in 1919 of illness in RN Hospital, Plymouth. Squadron Leader Chester Thompson who shot down 12 enemy aircraft in WW1, was lost when his aircraft crashed in Scotland in 1940. Second Lieutenant Hugh Colvin was awarded the Victoria Cross while serving with the Cheshire Regiment at Zillebeke, near Ypres, Belgium on the 20/09/1917. He died on this day in 1962, and his funeral was to Carnmoney Main Cemetery, Newtownabbey where a memorial stone situated beside the Cross of Sacrifice near the entrance to the cemetery was erected in his memory. It was unveiled in 2018 in the presence of Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for County Antrim Mrs Joan Christie CVO OBE, and members Mr Colvin’s family.
