October 4. Gosford’s Fleet Air Arm link. Roll of Honour

Photo – A Fleet Air Arm Supermarine Seafire being refuelled by a petrol bowser at Yeovilton in September 1943. Today’s Roll includes a Fleet Air Arm pilot from a well known Gosford family. Sub. Lieutenant The Honourable Michael Ernest Brabazon Acheson was killed in a flying accident whilst on active service from the RNAS station at Yeovilton this day in 1944. He was a brother of the Honourable Lieutenant Nicholas Acheson, who was in HMS Hereward when his ship was sunk in May 1941. Leslie Mann from Castledawson had emigrated to Australia where he enlisted in 1916. He died in 1917 and is named on the Menin Gate. His mother, Mrs. Margaret Hanson Mann, moved to Victoria Terrace, Portstewart, after her husband died; and his sister, Mrs. D.H. Christie, lived at Mountpleasant, Coleraine. On the same day Dungannon emigrant Robert Lawson serving with Canadian infantry died of gun shot wounds received in the vicinity of Regina Trench. His remains rest in Etaples Military Cemetery which was near the largest military hospital of the war. Robert Lawson and Samuel Steenson of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers both died on the same day and both are named on Dungannon War Memorial.
