Today’s Roll of Honour is dominated by the loss of navy men in the Battle of Coronel in 1914 who are remembered in the Falklands Cathedral. Gervase Bruce from Castlerock was only 15 years old. Andrew Mulholland of Ballywalter played cricket for Eton and Oxford. A member of MCC, and a former NI Horse officer, he died serving with the Irish Guards at Ypres in 1914. There is a memorial window in Ballywalter Parish Church. Commander John Sumner from Portaferry was lost in a torpedo boat after a collision in the Straits of Gibraltar in 1915. Three WW2 RAF men are in today’s Roll. Robert Montgomery from Ballymena is remembered at Alamein Memorial, Egypt, Eric Jenkinson from Lurgan is named on the Malta Memorial and at the Runnymeade Memorial, Thomas Sloan from Portadown is named. One of today’s Veterans was known to generations of Coleraine Inst boys as Sergeant Boyce. James served with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in WW1. He is commemorated on the Roll of Honour in Agherton (Portstewart) Parish Church. Jim died on 1 November 1944.
