
Today is the anniversary of the marriage of HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. On this day in 1917, 460 British tanks break through the German lines at Cambrai. It is history’s first successful large-scale armour attack. Dan McClelland from Bushmills and Manus McFadden from Portstewart died on that day. In WW2 two NI men were lost in HMS Khandahar. William Carson from Belfast had been a noted youth soccer international. George McDowell from Dollingstown was awarded the Albert Medal posthumous for bravery and devotion to duty saving life. One of today’s veterans, Basil Aldwell a naval flyer from Lurgan survived being a Japanese POW.
