November 22. Birthday of a Belfast Battle of Britain pilot. Roll of Honour

Hugh Heron AFC was born in Belfast and left Inst to join the RAF. He took part in the Battle of Britain. Fifteen names in the Roll of Honour today reflect the fighting around Cambrai in 1917. They include John Clydesdale of Downpatrick and Thomas Haslett from Ballymena. John’s brother had died at the Somme the previous July. Thomas was the son of a Presbyterian minister. Educated at the Ballymena Academy, Campbell College, and Foyle College, he played for Ulster in the Schools Inter-Provincial in two succeeding years and was one of the most promising halfs in Ireland. Aged 20, he fell serving as a Lieutenant with the Royal Irish Rifles. They are named with those with no known grave on the Cambrai Memorial at Louverval in France. Jonas Logan served with US forces. He died in 1917 and is named on the war memorial in Ballintoy Parish Church.
