Walter Edmenson, a Naval Reserve officer from HMS Caroline, who was a member of Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club, and of a well-known Belfast shipping company, was lost when his craft hit a mine on Boxing Day 1940. In 1943 Royal Navy ships sank German battlecruiser Scharnhorst in the Battle of North Cape off Norway. HMS Duke of York took part. Remembered today are men from NI who served in York. They are Andrew Andrews from Killyleagh, Edward Bingham a famous Arctic explorer from Dungannon, and William Jarvis from Londonderry.
