Photo – Menin Gate at night. Thomas Espey was a Railway Clerk in Cookstown before emigrating to South Africa. He enlisted in 1915 in the South African Infantry. He was one of the 143 survivors who left Delville Wood on 20/07/1916. He died this day in 1918. He is named on the Cookstown WM and in the parish church. In 1943 David McAuley from Ballygally died in RAF pilot training in Canada. His older brother Pilot Officer George McAuley, DFC, had been killed having been shot down on 20/08/1942. Leading Aircraftman David Stoddart, of Belfast, also died in 1943. He is named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt. George Hempenstall of Portstewart completed 13 years of Royal Navy service on this day in 1921. He saw war service in Dido, Pembroke, Antwerp, Baralong, Alexandria, and Indomitable. Robert Playfair from Woodvale, Belfast, served in the Royal Navy in both world wars. He was in HMS Tiger at Jutland. He is named in Woodvale Presbyterian Church’s RH. Wulverghem Military Cemetery is featured.
