January 31. Emma Duffin VAD. Battle of Moy. Roll of Honour

Emma Duffin who served as a VAD Nurse in both world wars is remembered today. She served in WW1 military hospitals and in WW2 encountered the effects of a blitz on Belfast in St George’s Market which was used as a morgue. Irish Guardsman William McMichael from Portstewart died of wounds in Paisley in 1917. Today is the anniversary of the Battle of May in 1918 when RN submarines collided and three from NI died including John McDonald who was the son of a fireman at Central Fire Station, Chichester St., Belfast. In WW2 James Hillen a Gunner from Newry died in Japan. Sam Weir from Bessbrook is remembered on the RAF Runnymeade Memorial and John Murdie from Belfast at Delhi War Cemetery, India.
