In 1916 two Belfast men, Alfred Bingam and Joseph Jones of the Royal Irish Rifles, 9th Btn, died on the Somme. In today’s roll of veterans, two brothers David and William McCabrey from Lurgan enrolled in the Royal Navy on 05/02/1906 for 12 years service. David served until 1927. Stephen Lamont from Coleraine was a boy entrant to the RN from 1916 -18 and was slightly injured at Jutland. He was not deterred, he signed on for 12 more years in November 1916. During the night of 4/5 February 1945 a patrol from 2 Royal Ulster Rifles crossed the Meuse and took two German soldiers prisoner gaining, in the regiment’s records, very valuable intelligence.
