
On this day in 1940 RNR Commander William Brown Piggot from Londonderry had his first major success as a U-boat hunter. He was awarded the DSC and bar. In 1941 Sergeant Air Gunner Robert Richardson, a former member of Carnmoney Parish Church Lads Brigade, died near Kiel. The Richardson Trophy for under-15’s schools’ hockey was given as a memorial to him. In 1944 the North Irish Horse took part in the massive fourth attack on Monte Cassino which began on this day and were awarded a unique Canadian honour for their support. Gunner Bernard McKernan of the 3rd Maritime Regiment perished when a U boat sunk SS Empire Heath off Rio de Janeiro.
