
Coleraine born Thomas Moody died in 1918 serving with New Zealand infantry and is named on his country’s Roll of Honour. 14 of the names in today’s Roll are men who fell in the costly rearguard action to Dunkirk in 1940. They came from Newry, Bessbrook, Hillsborough, Belfast and Downpatrick. William Rankin, an Irish Guardsman from Enniskillen, died in the Narvik operation of 1940. Edmund Robinson of Lisburn died in HMS Orion during the evacuation of Crete in 1941. Orion received 13 battle honours, a record only exceeded by HMS Warspite.
