
Stanley Burrowes from Lisburn saw action on the Normandy beaches, in Cambes Woods, and Denmark in WW2. In 1916 two NI men from Portadown and Coalisland. who returned with Canadian forces died and are named on the Menin Gate in Ypres. Three women are in today’s Roll. Ida Martin died as a VAD nurse in 1917 and Margaret Rice a WAAF from Enniskillen died in 1941. Today’s veteran is Third Officer Hazel Dolling WRNS who endowed the Cookstown area with Lissan House her family home. The cost of D-Day + is shown by five entries from the 1st Airborne Battalion of the Royal Ulster Rifles. Thomas Chambers from Broughshane, William Hegan – Newry, Terence McCarthy – Belfast, Thomas McClelland – Milfort, and John Watson – Dunmurry. Photo – Events on this day – In 1944, German Tiger tank commander Wittmann stops the entire British 7th Armoured Division advance to Caen, “single-handedly”, at Villers-Bocage. Wittmann destroyed in less than fifteen minutes 13 tanks, 2 anti-tank guns, and 14 transport vehicles.
