In 1916 Hugh Davison from Belfast fell with Canadian Infantry in Belgium. He was one of three brothers to die in the war. In 1919 a homecoming parade in Belfast welcomed the Ulster Division’s return from war. That same day Stanley McMurtrie a Church of Ireland clergyman who had served in parishes on the Shankill Road and Banbridge, died in a London hospital from illness related to trench-fever he contracted serving as an army chaplain in Palestine. John Murtagh’s journey with RASC in WW2 took him from Sword Beach to Caen and Belsen. Remembering with others Wilnor Crawford, RUR Airborne, from Ballymena, William Stockman from Coleraine who died in Austria and Thomas Berkeley from Carrick who flew Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain. Berkeley had worked at Gallagher’s Tobacco Factory in York Street, Belfast, and served as a pre-war member of the RAF Reserve.
