In today’s Roll are remembered John Irvine from Ligoniel and John Murphy from Cookstown, both of the Pioneer Corps, who were lost in Lancastria, a Cunard Cruise Liner used as a a Troop Transport Ship, in 1940. This was the largest loss of life in a sinking in WW2. Read three veterans’ stories – Field Marshall Alan Brooke of Cole Brooke, Fermanagh, who is one of the foremost military figures of WW2; RSM William McConnell from Ballyclare was RUR airborne on D Day and served through to Korea; and Thomas Buchanan, an army doctor from Lisburn who served in Gaza, Palestine, and Egypt in WW1 being twice Mentioned in Despatches.
