June 26. The First VC. Dedication of Army nurse from RVH. Roll of Honour

The first VC was won by Charles Lucas from Poyntzpass who was present at the first VC investiture this day in 1857. Alex McCrea a Gunner from Dungannon served in the Boer War, Gallipoli, and Belgium where he died in 1916. Thomas Finlay from Portrush had been a member of the Coleraine Battalion, North Derry Regiment, Ulster Volunteer Force. He was awarded a Military Medal. He died in Belgium in 1917 serving with Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 10th Btn. (The Derrys). In 1918 Rachel Ferguson an army nurse from Coagh who qualified at the Royal Victoria Hospital, died serving in Italy. Alex McCrea a Gunner from Dungannon served in Boer War, Gallipoli and Belgium. Arthur Sinton from Gilford, a RAFVR officer, is remembered at Rockport School and Royal County Down Golf Club. David Hetherington from Derry was lost in a Lancaster Bomber over France in 1944. On the same date, George McKnight from Belfast and Joseph Thompson from Armagh died in the same plane over Hungary. Jim Kerr, a WW2 RAF Vet from Enniskillen, helped Portadown FC do the double.
