July 10. NI men in the Battle of Britain. Roll of Honour

The Battle for Britain commenced today in 1940. 14 men from NI died serving as aircrew in this decisive airborne battle. Four sons of the Newell family from the Antrim Road in Belfast served in WW1.Three died in service. Walter, a former student of BRA died this day in 1915. The Regimental War Diary provides an account of the courage of Hugh Small from Keady who was awarded the Military Cross five weeks previous to his death in 1916. Airborne medical officer, Hubert Greeves, died serving in the 1944 campaign in Italy. The former student of Royal School Dungannon and Queen’s University is remembered on the Cassino Memorial. Edward Carleton from Belfast died in HMS Golden Hind in the Pacific theatre in 1945. His remains rest at Sydney War Cemetery, Australia.
