July 15. Fate of Orange Sash blessed by the Pope. Roll of Honour

A Sergeant Major and leading Orange light from Sion Mills took his sash to an audience with the Pope in WW2. The sash later had an untimely end. Death from wounds at the Somme features in today’s Roll of Honour for 1916. John Alexander of Drumbeg died only twelve days after going to the front. The entry for Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Serjeant Joseph Doak contains three excerpts from the Portadown News which are insightful. Ezekiel Vance, son-in-law of the Presbyterian Moderator, Dr. West of Antrim, was known to be in hospital after the battle. Isaac Doole from nearby Muckamore died of wounds in 1918. His name is featured on the list of Muckamore UVF men to join the 11th RIR. Photo – Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
