
In 1944 Old Portoran John Gorman was awarded the Military Cross for action in a tank battle in Normandy. Eliza Mehaffey a Royal Navy Nursing Sister from Strabane died when the plane she was traveling in to Gibraltar was shot down in 1943. On the same day, Belfast-born Charles Everitt fell with the Royal Canadian Regiment in the invasion of Sicily. George Maginnis from Aughnacloy, an officer in the airborne battalion of the Royal Ulster Rifles, fell in Normandy in 1944. Matthew McKelvey Boyd, a cousin of the compiler of Remembrance NI, died with the Inniskillings in India in 1942. He was named after an uncle who survived the Somme in WW1.
