July 24. Anniversary of Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Belfast Gunners at Dunkirk. Roll of Honour

Today is the anniversary of the unveiling of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in 1927. Many names from Northern Ireland are engraved on it including that of the first MP to be killed in WW1- Captain, the Honourable Arthur Edward Bruce O’Neill, 2nd Life Guards, Member of Parliament for Mid-Antrim and father of Captain Terence O’Neill, Prime Minister of Northern Ireland between 1963 and 1969. North Irish Horse names on the memorial include William Adams of Ballymoney who was married to Maggie Wilson Ross at Coleraine. Another Horseman, Samuel Linden in 1915 was awarded a testimonial on vellum by the Royal Humane Society for having, “on 19th July last rescued two girls from 12 feet of water at Castlerock, County Derry.” He married Florence Elizabeth Neill at Templemore, Londonderry. This is also the anniversary of the formation of the Royal Marines. Today’s veteran is Geoffrey Bing whose father founded Rockport School. Bing served in the Royal Corps of Signals in WW2 in North Africa and Europe. In 1945 he was elected Labour MP for Hornchurch. In his later life, Bing moved to Ghana and set up a law practice. He was a close ally of the first Prime Minister of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah.
