August 5. VJ Day and Commonwealth contribution in the Far East. Roll of Honour

Long before Starwars Lt Alec Guinness RN was at Sicily in WW2. Enteric fever claimed the life of Able Seaman Ernest Keane from Helen’s Bay. He died in 1915 in 21st General Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt. John Boyle from Coalisland served with the Australian infantry. He died in action in 1916 on the last day of the Battle of Pozieres. and George Coleman from Dungannon served with Canadian forces in WW1. He had previously served seven years with the Royal Irish Rifles and a further 2 years in reserve before emigrating to Canada. John Witherow from Derry and his brother both died. Two men from the RUR and Skins died in Sicily in 1943. William Cathcart from Kells and George Hill from Belfast are remembered at Catania War Cemetery. William Rowan, RAF aircrew from Ballymena, died as a Japanese POW. James Douglas a C of I Chaplain with Dunmurry links died in Normandy. He was Mentioned in Despatches.
