August 7. Derry’s Australia Light Horse Trooper at Gallipoli. Roll of Honour

In today’s Roll are the names of 14 NI men who died on this day in 1915 in Gallipoli including Trooper Henry McNeill from Londonderry serving with the Australian Light Horse. On this day two local sportsmen died – Hugh Travers of Dungannon Rugby Club in 1915 and Edward Brown of Lisnagarvey Hockey Club in 1917. William McMaster from Cullybackey who died in 1917 was one of five sons who served. Edward Reid from Belfast who was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field, in July 1917 died this day in 1917. Samuel Thompson, a military policeman from Belfast became a prisoner of war when Singapore was taken. He died in a pow camp in Malaya in 1943.
