The five entries in today’s Roll for 1915 are of casualties in Gallipoli. Included in the entry of Inniskilling Fusilier Robert Nelis from Londonderry is an excerpt from Sir Frank Fox’s book describing the actions of the 1st Battalion on this day. Kilrea-born Stewart Faulkner worked at Clarks of Upperlands before he emigrated to Australia. He died in 1916 serving with Australian Infantry. HMS Prize was a Q ship – a spy ship whose Captain had been awarded the Victoria Cross. She was sunk by a U Boat this day in 1917. George Jarrett, a Petty Officer from Ballintoy had been twice decorated for his service which began as a Boy Sailor in 1902. Alexander Williamson’s family roots were in Portstewart and he is named on the town’s War Memorial. Cecil Montgomery from Fivemiletown died intercepting a Luftwaffe raid over Dover in 1940.
