On this night in 1940 London was bombed. For 56 nights thereafter air raids continued. On this day in 1945, an Allied Victory parade was held in Berlin. Today’s Roll of Honour contains a remarkable account of an action in 1914 during the battle of Aisne. Lurgan man James Cousins of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers was killed by shrapnel in the same action as Lieutenant H. A. Boyd. They were buried side by side. Lieutenant Boyd’s mother wrote to the Lurgan Branch of the Soldiers and Sailors Association with information on a marble cross she had erected with both sons’ names. Amongst today’s veterans is the very remarkable Martin `Tina’ Charters (Photo). He was one of NI’s last survivors from the Second World War, and of many Bomber Command flights. He was loved and cherished in Killyleagh and Shrigley. Oscar Heron was the son of the Principal of St Patrick’s School, Banbrook Hill, Armagh. He left university and joined the Royal Flying Corps. He was credited with 13 victories, most of them during October 1918. He was awarded the DFC and Belgian Croix de Guerre and was promoted to Captain and flight commander. Heron joined the Irish Air Corps in 1922. He was killed during the Irish Air Corps’ first Air Pageant at Phoenix Park in 1933.
