September 11. News Letter reporter in North Irish Horse in WW1. Roll of Honour

Robert Sterling of the Belfast News Letter and the North Irish Horse left a unique record in his correspondence from 1913 – 21. Today’s Roll of Honour shows how some families were hard hit by war. Two sons of Samuel and Rachel Bryans from Caledon and three sons of Alex Angus of Bangor died in WW1 on this day. Alex Green from Craigavad fought in the Battle of Britain and later died over the French coast in 1940. He has no known grave but is named on memorials at Runnymeade, Belfast Cathedral, and Craigavad. Able Seaman Douglas Alexander from Coleraine was lost whilst serving in HM Submarine Sceptre in 1944. Veteran William McIntyre from Portstewart served with the artillery and was gassed in WW1. William died on 11/09/1937 and was buried in the old church at Agherton cemetery. He is named on the Roll of Honour in Agherton (Portstewart) Parish Church.
