September 19. NI Navigator died with Guy Gibson VC. Roll of Honour

Using sources in the Netherlands, Remembrance Ni reveals the quite remarkable story of James Warwick the navigator from Ligoniel who died with Guy Gibson VC. Today’s Roll includes – Coleraine born Robert McFetridge who served in the Royal Navy and died this day in 1919. The remains of the former Trimmer in HMS Satellite rest in Ballywillan Cemetery, Portrush. William Yool, a member of Queen’s OTC who served in the army in WW1, rose to Air Vice-Marshall in the RAF. Flying to Singapore due to an an oil leak emergency, he landed on the only beach for 300 miles and repaired the leak with chewing gum and took off before his aircraft was engulfed by the incoming tide. Parachute Regiment Sergeant Robert White from Dungannon was shot down when parachuting onto Ginkel Heath on the second day of the Battle of Arnhem. David Norton from Rostrevor served in the Royal Navy in WW2. He died in 1958 in Natal, South Africa, where he had farmed.
