At least twenty-eight men from NI were lost when a U boat sank three Cressy class ships in a matter of minutes on this day in 1914. It was the first of two actions in three weeks announcing the arrival of the U boat. Today’s Roll includes two medical officers who had been members of the Training Corps at Queen’s University, two men who served with Canadian forces, and two men born in Randalstown. On this day in 1918 Campbell McCormack from Drumbo, an army medical officer, was killed. He had been awarded the Military Cross and two bars and been Mentioned in Despatches in Sir John French’s last dispatch. He was awarded the MC in September 1916. The citation published in the London Gazette read, “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations. He directed the stretcher-bearers under heavy shellfire with the greatest coolness and courage… He was killed just over a year after his marriage. He was 27 years old. The cost of Operation Market Garden continues in today’s Roll. George Doherty from Londonderry serving in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers and Irish Guardsman William Watters from Belfast were fatalities in 1944.
