On this day in 1918, the Allies smash through Germany’s ‘Hindenburg Line’. Within 43 days, WW1 will be over. The Roll today reflects the cost of the attack. Among the fallen is 25-year-old Ernest Seaman, who was awarded the Victoria Cross. He is remembered in the Royal Irish Regimental Chapel at Belfast Cathedral. David McCandless from Portstewart died with Australian infantry. Millar McGuigan of the North Irish Horse died of TB in 1919 as a result of war service. He is remembered on Ballyclare WM. WW2 entries in today’s Roll include four RAF men whose remains rest in Singapore, Egypt, England, and the Netherlands. Corporal David Diffin from Tandragee died on the Death Railway at a prisoner of war camp in 1943. RAFVR Corporal William Taylor was taken prisoner of war in the Pacific theatre of operations. He was one of 650 Allied prisoners of war held in horrendous conditions on board the Japanese “Hell Ship” the Maros Maru which was struck this day in 1944 in Allied raids on nearby islands.
